Family is the driving force behind Beam...
Mike and June Rough
The Beam Easy Living Center is truly a Nevada County Family owned business. In February 1979, Mike and June Rough packed up their station wagon with little money, four kids, two dogs and most importantly their faith, left Ohio and headed west to California for a new life. Not long after arriving they opened the first Beam Center on East Main St in Grass Valley. In 2002, their daughters and sons-in-law, Bob & Julie Medlyn and Brian & Rachel O'Brien, purchased the business from Mike and June and kept it in the family. The Rough’s had a motto that The Beam Easy Living Center still operates by today… “Our customers are not simply buying our products, they are buying us, our service, and support before, during, and after the sale.”
The Medlyn’s and O'Brien's love the community they live in and give back in every way possible. As a board member of the Chamber of Commerce for the past 18 years, as well as the Nevada County Law and Fire Council, and countless other community driven associations Bob Medlyn works tirelessly to give back. Both the Medlyn's and the O'Brien's give the same amount of love and focus to their business as they do the people around them and that shows by the quality of the work that is done by Beam.
The Beam Easy Living Center has been named Beam Industries dealer / distributor of the year in the nation since 1997. Beam also boasts an impressive dealer network distributing products and providing warranty service to 30 plus dealers throughout Northern California and Nevada.
Today Beam Easy Living Center provides the community with 20 plus professional positions with comprehensive benefits including medical & 401K while striving to maintain a friendly family atmosphere. Beam hasn’t forgotten the community which is most responsible for their success either. Beam Easy Living Center proudly sponsors numerous organizations and local causes. Nevada Union sports, Bear River Little League, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Nevada County Airfest, Nevada County Fair, Draft Horse Classic, participation in dozens of local service club fundraisers and the list goes on and on. In 2004 they took community service one step further by creating the Keeping Kids Safe Festival to be held every April for 10 consecutive years. The inaugural event drew 3000 people and resulted in over 1000 kids receiving ID kits administered by the Klaas Kids Foundation. The community was able to meet Marc Klaas in person and receive important safety information from local Police and Fire agencies in a fun, festive format chock full of fun free activities, prizes and food.
Over the past 43 years we have expanded our business to much more than “just vacuums”. We are currently one of the largest businesses and home security alarm providers in Nevada, Placer, Yuba, and Sutter counties providing our customers with CCTV, fire and burglary alarm systems, and access control. In 1999 they relocated to a 13,000 sq. ft. facility with attached warehouse and now offer a huge selection of televisions, audio/video equipment and speakers in a state of the art 5,000 sq. ft. showroom. With the expanded showroom Beam offers Central vacuum systems, portable vacuums, whole house fans, audio video equipment and installation, Big Green Egg products, Sonos audio equipment and much more…
It has been more than 40 years since that fateful drive across the country but the wheels are still turning to this day on a journey which will continue to roll through a community they are proud to be a part of and thankful for the warm support they have received.
